Care Summary

One of the most vivid of the micro-rasboras: barely 2cm long but a luminous metallic green that, in a large shoal moving through a planted tank, reads like a drifting cloud of green light. The kubotai rasbora is an active, social, open-water schooler that needs numbers more than almost any other nano fish, rewarding a group of fifteen or more with bold mid-water shoaling and disappointing in small groups by hiding away. It has a tiny mouth and needs correspondingly small foods (crushed flake, micro-pellets, baby brine shrimp) and a mature, stable, planted tank. Hardy enough once settled, but best treated as a fish for an established nano aquarium rather than a brand-new one. A spectacular, low-cost centrepiece for a dedicated nano shoal.

Tankmates

A tiny, brilliant apple-green schooling fish that must be kept in a large group, eight at an absolute minimum and ideally fifteen or more, to feel secure and shoal in the open; in small numbers it is shy and spends its time hidden. Its minute size makes it genuinely shrimp-safe, even with shrimplets, and an ideal companion for a planted nano or shrimp tank, but equally it is small enough to be eaten by almost any larger fish, so keep it only with other micro-species. Pair it with chili rasboras, ember tetras, celestial pearl danios, and dwarf shrimp. A densely planted tank with open mid-water swimming lanes shows the school to best effect.
