Advanced aquascaping

Once you can build a tidy layout and grow easy plants, aquascaping opens up: precise composition, sculpted hardscape, demanding carpets and reds, and the high-tech growth that makes a contest tank possible. This guide assumes you have the fundamentals from our aquascaping for beginners guide and pushes into the craft that separates a neat planted tank from a scape that could hold its own in Takashi Amano's International Aquatic Plants Layout Contest.

Beyond the basics

The beginner's rules, one off-centre focal point, a clear shape, depth, and open space, never stop applying. What changes at this level is precision and intent. A beginner arranges things so they look natural; an advanced scaper controls exactly where the eye travels, how far the scene appears to recede, and how a viewer feels looking at it. Amano's bar was not "a tidy tank" but a scene that reads as a genuine fragment of nature, which is a much harder target and the one worth aiming at.

Everything below assumes healthy water and healthy plants underneath the artistry. A struggling tank cannot be scaped into a good one, so the growth chapters here matter as much as the design ones.

Composition mastery and iwagumi

The rule of thirds is a beginner's shortcut to a more exact idea: the golden ratio, roughly 1 to 1.618. Placing your focal point about 0.618 of the way across the tank, rather than a flat third, is the proportion Amano returned to again and again, and it is worth marking on the glass with tape when you set the hardscape.

Beyond placement, think in visual weight: a large dark stone, a dense red bush, or a strong diagonal line all pull the eye, and a good layout balances them so nothing feels like it is about to tip over, while still leaning slightly (perfect balance is static and dull). Leading lines, the grain of a rock, the sweep of a piece of wood, a valley of substrate, should all guide the eye toward the focal point, not away from it.

Forced perspective is how a 45 cm tank becomes a mountain range. Grade everything front to back: larger stones and coarser gravel at the front, smaller stones and finer sand behind; broad-leaved plants forward, fine-leaved plants back; a path or stream of pale substrate that narrows as it recedes. The eye reads the shrinking scale as distance.

Iwagumi, the stone-only style Amano formalised, is the purest test of composition because there is nowhere to hide. It uses an odd number of stones (traditionally three) in defined roles:

Get those angles and proportions right, plant a single low carpet, leave generous open space, and an iwagumi looks effortless. Get them slightly wrong and it looks like rocks in a fish tank, which is exactly why it is the layout to practise on.

The styles in depth

The Dutch aquarium is the most rule-bound style in the hobby, and its conventions are worth knowing even if you never build one. A classic Dutch tank plants roughly seventy percent of the floor, arranges plants in terraces rising to the back, and composes with contrast: no two adjacent groups should share the same leaf colour, size, or texture. Its signature is the "Dutch street", a diagonal row of a single species (often a red one) that draws the eye into the tank from front to back. Plant groups are spaced by size (a rough guide is one species per ten centimetres of tank width), and the whole thing is a display of plant-growing skill rather than a naturalistic scene.

An advanced Nature Aquarium, by contrast, is judged partly on invisibility: every glued seam between rocks, every cable tie holding wood, every pot and lead should disappear into the finished scene. The best ones create a specific mood, a misty ravine, a sunlit forest floor, and hold it consistently, with plant choices, colours, and textures all serving that one idea.

A serious biotope raises the bar again by demanding accuracy: the fish, plants, hardscape, and even the water chemistry all match one real location, so an Amazon blackwater biotope means soft acidic water, leaf litter, branchy wood, and only species that genuinely share that habitat. It is as much research as art.

Advanced hardscape construction

At this level hardscape is assembled, not simply stacked. The core tools are cyanoacrylate (superglue) gel and two-part epoxy putty, which bond rock and wood underwater and let you build shapes gravity would never hold: overhangs, arches, floating ledges, and caves. Cable ties and stainless pins hold larger driftwood pieces together while glue or putty cures.

A tall "mountain" is rarely solid rock, which would be enormously heavy and swallow bags of soil. Instead, scapers build a lightweight core (foam, egg-crate, or a mound of inert filler) and glue a shell of matched stone over it, hiding the seams so it reads as one weathered outcrop. Driftwood "trees" are made the same way: a trunk of spider wood, finer branches glued into a canopy, and moss tied on and trimmed so it grows in like foliage. Matching your material, so every stone in a group is clearly the same rock, is what keeps a built structure from looking artificial.

Demanding plants and carpets

The plants that define high-tech scaping are the ones a low-tech tank cannot hold. Carpets like dwarf hairgrass, Monte Carlo, and Hemianthus callitrichoides ("HC Cuba") stay low and dense only under strong light and stable CO2. Vivid red stems (Rotala, Ludwigia, and the like) colour up on high light plus iron and rich dosing. Collector's epiphytes such as the many Bucephalandra varieties are slower and less demanding, but reward the stable, mature conditions an established scape provides.

Most serious scapers now start these from tissue culture: plants grown sterile in a lab, sold in gel pots, free of snails, algae, and pesticide residues. They are perfect for a clean carpet start. The dry-start method pairs well with them: plant the carpet into wet soil, keep the tank humid but not flooded under a lid and light for four to six weeks so the carpet roots emersed (with no algae risk and no CO2 needed yet), then slowly flood and switch to full high-tech running.

High-tech: CO2, light, and dosing

High-tech scaping is the deliberate balance of three inputs: light, CO2, and nutrients. Light sets the pace of growth, and the plants then demand CO2 and nutrients to match. Push one ahead of the others and the tank punishes you.

Pressurised CO2 is effectively mandatory for carpets and reds. Aim for roughly 30 ppm (a green drop checker), run it on a timer that comes on an hour or two before the lights and off before they go out, and prize stability over a high number, as swinging CO2 causes more algae than a steady moderate level. For nutrients, the common high-tech approach is the Estimative Index (EI): dose deliberately generous macro and micro nutrients through the week so plants are never short, then reset any build-up with a large (roughly fifty percent) weekly water change. Leaner dosing works too and suits slower tanks. Because aqua soil feeds roots but heavy column-feeders and stems also want water-column nutrients, most high-tech tanks dose the water as well, with fertilisers like Seachem Flourish. Finally, flow matters: aim for strong, even circulation (around ten times the tank volume per hour) so CO2 and nutrients reach every leaf. Dead spots are where algae starts.

Maintaining a mature scape

A scape is not finished when it is planted; it is shaped for months afterward. Stem plants are trimmed to force branching: cut the tops, replant the healthy cut tops, and the bases send out multiple new shoots, thickening the bush over successive trims. Carpets are trimmed flat to stay low and to stop the lower layer rotting once it thickens. Epiphytes get their oldest leaves removed at the base rather than mid-leaf.

Every scape has a peak, the window where it has grown in but not yet outgrown its layout, and part of the craft is trimming and thinning to hold that peak, then recognising when a tank is past it. Aqua soil exhausts and breaks down over roughly one to three years, plants outgrow their positions, and eventually a full rescape beats endless patching. Experienced scapers plan for that: they photograph a layout at its best, then tear it down and start again, which is why the same tank can hold a dozen different scapes over its life.

Competition, photography, and Australia

Amano did not just build scapes; he founded the contest that defines the hobby's high end. The IAPLC (International Aquatic Plants Layout Contest), run by his company ADA, draws thousands of entries from around the world each year and ranks them, judged on the layout's composition, the health and cultivation of the plants, originality, and above all the "sense of nature" Amano prized. Studying the ranked galleries is one of the fastest ways to train your own eye.

Because entries are judged from a single photograph, presentation is genuinely part of the art, and Amano was a professional photographer before he was an aquascaper. Photographing a scape well means spotless glass, the water filled to the very brim, the drop checker and any visible equipment removed, even front-on lighting, the fish settled and posed, and a straight, front-on shot. A mediocre photo can sink a beautiful tank, and a well-shot one flatters a good one.

For Australian scapers, the constraints from the beginner guide bite harder at this level. Biosecurity rules keep a number of prized carpets and stems out of the country entirely, so build your palette from what is legally available here and lean on tissue culture from Australian suppliers. If you run a soft-water high-tech scape on the hard, alkaline tap water of Brisbane, Perth, or Adelaide, an RO unit (remineralised to a light, stable hardness) gives the control demanding plants want.
