How to cool an aquarium in an Australian summer
Most aquarium advice is written for people whose problem is keeping a tank warm. In Australia the opposite is true for a few months a year: a 40°C afternoon can push a tank past what its fish can survive, and it happens faster than most beginners expect. Heat is more dangerous than cold, because warm water holds less oxygen at exactly the moment fish need more of it. This guide covers why that happens, how to recognise it, how to bring a hot tank down safely, and how to set your tank up so next summer is uneventful.

Why a hot tank is dangerous
The danger of a hot aquarium is not the temperature itself. It is oxygen.
Water holds dissolved oxygen, and the warmer it gets, the less it can hold. At the same time, fish are cold-blooded, so their body temperature and metabolism follow the water. A fish at 31°C is running hot: its heart rate, respiration, and oxygen demand all climb. So the supply falls and the demand rises at the same moment, and the two curves cross. That crossing point is where fish start dying, and it is why a tank can look perfectly normal in the morning and hold dead fish by evening.
Three other things happen alongside it, and they compound:
- The biological filter works harder and needs more oxygen too. Your beneficial bacteria are aerobic. In a low-oxygen tank they slow down, which can let ammonia climb just when fish are least able to cope with it (see how to cycle a new aquarium).
- Waste breaks down faster. Decay accelerates in warm water and consumes oxygen as it goes, so an over-fed or over-stocked tank tips over sooner.
- Disease follows stress. Heat-stressed fish are immune-suppressed, and outbreaks of ich and bacterial infections often arrive a few days after a hot spell rather than during it (see common fish diseases).
The practical upshot: when a tank overheats, oxygen is the emergency, and temperature is the underlying cause. Fix both, but treat the oxygen first, because it is faster and it is what is actually killing them.
The warning signs of heat stress
Fish tell you they are short of oxygen long before they die. Learn to read it.
- Gasping at the surface. The top film of water holds the most oxygen, so fish hanging at the surface mouthing air is the classic signal. In a species that never normally visits the surface, this is an emergency.
- Crowding the filter outflow. Fish gathering where the water is most agitated are chasing oxygen.
- Rapid gill movement. Gills pumping visibly faster than normal, often while the fish sits still.
- Lethargy, or the opposite. Some fish go still and sit on the bottom. Others dart erratically. Both are stress.
- Loss of appetite, or food taken and spat out.
- Bottom-dwellers coming up. A pleco or corydoras leaving the floor to sit near the surface is a late and serious sign.
How hot is too hot
A tropical community tank runs at 24 to 26°C. Most tropical fish cope with a drift up to about 28°C, become genuinely stressed between 28 and 30°C, and are in danger above 30°C. Sustained temperatures over 32°C will kill most community species.
But "tropical" hides a lot of variation, and the fish that suffer first are the ones people least expect. Coldwater and subtropical species are in trouble at temperatures a betta would barely notice:

Check your own stock in the species directory, and remember that the tank's ceiling is set by its least heat-tolerant occupant. A mixed tank of white clouds and bettas has a summer ceiling of 22°C, not 30°C, which is one more reason not to mix coldwater and tropical species (see how to stock a community tank).
Cooling a tank down, ranked by cost
Work down this list in order. The free measures are also the fastest, and in most Australian homes they are enough. Aim to bring the temperature down gradually, no more than about 1°C per hour, because a fast drop is its own kind of shock.
Free, and do these first
- Maximise surface agitation. Raise the filter outflow so it breaks the surface, add an airstone, or point a spray bar upward. This is the single most valuable thing you can do, because it is oxygen, not temperature, that is the immediate threat.
- Turn the lights off. Aquarium lights add heat, and the tank does not need them. Leave them off for the duration of the hot spell (see aquarium lighting explained).
- Turn the heater off. Obvious, but easy to forget. A thermostat should not be calling for heat anyway, but a faulty one is a common cause of overheating in the first place, so unplug it and remove the doubt.
- Take the lid off. An open top lets heat escape and lets evaporation do its cooling work. The trade-off is jumping fish, so leave it off only while you are home and put it back at night, or cover the opening with mesh.
- Close the curtains and blinds on the side of the house the sun is hitting, and shut the room off from the rest of the house if it is cooler elsewhere.
- Feed lightly, or skip a day. Uneaten food and extra waste decay quickly in warm water and consume oxygen. A day without food harms nothing (see how to feed your aquarium fish).
Frozen bottles and a household fan
Float a sealed bottle of frozen water. Fill a clean plastic bottle with tap water, freeze it, and float it in the tank with the cap on. The bottle cools the water without diluting it or introducing anything, and you can rotate two or three bottles through the freezer across a hot day. Keep an eye on the thermometer so the drop stays gradual, and remove the bottle once you are back in range.
Point a fan across the water surface. Any household fan angled over an open tank causes evaporative cooling, which typically pulls a tank down by a couple of degrees and sometimes more. It works best in dry heat, so it is more effective in Adelaide or Perth than in humid Cairns or Darwin. Purpose-made clip-on aquarium cooling fans do the same job in a tidier package for a small outlay.
Top up for evaporation with dechlorinated fresh water. Rapid evaporation removes water but leaves the dissolved minerals behind, so hardness and any accumulated nitrate concentrate as the level drops. Top up with fresh dechlorinated water (we use Seachem Prime) at roughly the tank's current temperature, not straight from a cold tap.
Cool the room, not the tank
If you have air conditioning, this is the most effective and most stable answer there is, and it beats every aquarium gadget. A tank sits in equilibrium with its room, so holding the room at a sane temperature holds the tank there too, without swings, without you intervening, and without evaporation stripping the tank overnight.
It is also worth running the aircon in the room the tank is in rather than the room you are in, if you have to choose during a heatwave. Fish cannot leave. If the house has one cool room, that is where a portable tank should live for the day, though moving an established tank is a last resort and never something to attempt while it is full.
An aquarium chiller
A chiller is a refrigeration unit plumbed into the tank's flow, and it is the only method that holds an exact temperature regardless of the weather. It is also expensive to buy, expensive to run, and physically bulky, so for a freshwater community tank it is usually overkill.
Chillers earn their place in three situations: coldwater or subtropical species kept somewhere genuinely hot (hillstream loaches in Brisbane, for instance), high-value livestock where a single bad day is unacceptable, and homes with no air conditioning and repeated 40°C summers. Size it to your tank volume and buy Australian-certified 240V equipment. For most keepers, a fan and a frozen bottle covers the handful of days a year that matter.
What not to do
Panic causes more losses than heat does. These are the interventions to avoid.
- Do not tip loose ice into the tank. It cools unevenly and far too fast, and ordinary ice is frozen chlorinated tap water. Use a sealed bottle instead.
- Do not do a large cold water change. Swapping out a big volume for cool tap water drops the temperature suddenly, which shocks fish that are already stressed. If you change water at all, keep it small and close to the tank's current temperature, then let the tank come down gradually. Our water changes guide covers matching temperature.
- Do not turn the filter off, even if you think it is adding heat. Its contribution is trivial next to the oxygen and circulation it provides, and stopping flow in a hot tank starves the filter bacteria as well as the fish.
- Do not add chemicals to "help". There is no additive that fixes heat. Ammonia binders have their place if a filter has genuinely faltered, but the answer to hot water is cooler, better-oxygenated water.
- Do not assume it is over when the air cools. Water changes temperature slowly, so a tank stays hot for hours after the room has cooled, and often peaks in the early evening. Keep aerating until the thermometer says otherwise.
Preparing for next summer
Nearly every heat emergency traces back to a decision made months earlier. The preventable causes, in rough order of how often they bite:
- Tank placement. A tank in direct sun, or against a west-facing window, will overheat every summer no matter what you do on the day. It also grows algae enthusiastically (see types of aquarium algae). Set tanks on an internal wall, out of direct sun, when you first set them up: it is nearly impossible to fix later.
- Stocking choices. If your house regularly hits the high 30s and has no air conditioning, coldwater species are a poor fit, and so are hillstream loaches and other cool, high-oxygen specialists. Choose species that suit your actual climate, the same principle as choosing fish that suit your tap water.
- A failed heater. Thermostats stick on, and a stuck heater in an already-warm room is a genuine killer. Replace ageing heaters, and size them correctly with the heater wattage calculator: an oversized heater does more damage when it fails. - Stocking density. A heavily stocked tank has less oxygen headroom and tips into crisis sooner. Check yours in the stocking calculator.
- No air pump. A cheap air pump and airstone sitting in a cupboard is the best insurance in the hobby. Buy one before you need it.
Build the seasonal checks into your routine: unplug the heater in late spring, move the tank's photoperiod to the cooler part of the day, keep two bottles in the freezer from November, and add a summer temperature check to your maintenance schedule.
Around Australia, and the blackout problem
Australia is not one climate, and the right summer plan is different in each part of it.
In Darwin, Cairns, and the tropical north, the issue is not a heatwave but a baseline: indoor temperatures sit high for months, and humidity blunts evaporative cooling, so fans do less than they would elsewhere. Coldwater species are a poor choice here, and air conditioning does the heavy lifting. In Brisbane and Perth, long stretches of dry heat make fans genuinely effective, and a shaded, internal-wall tank placement matters more than any device. In Sydney and Adelaide, the pattern is short, sharp spikes: a handful of extreme days each summer, which is exactly what frozen bottles and a fan are for. In Melbourne, Hobart, and the highlands, summer is usually a non-event for tanks, but the sudden 40°C day still arrives, and it catches people who have never needed a plan.
One consolation: a summer heat problem is almost entirely solvable with preparation, and unlike winter heating it costs nothing to run for most of the year. A tank placed out of the sun, stocked to suit the local climate, and equipped with an air pump and a couple of bottles in the freezer will pass through an Australian summer without drama.
